Mark Jenkinson MP has questioned Ministers in Department for International Development questions today in the Chamber of the House of Commons.
Mark has asked the Minister about what the Department is doing to reduce plastic waste in our oceans.
Mark was prompted to raise the question by a Cumbrian incident which saw the Finn Whale Driggsby washed up on the Cumbrian coast. The whale is now on display in Tullie House Museum, Carlisle.
The Museum, along with Prism Arts, has been working on a project about Driggsby with west Cumbrian Primary Schools which has even resulted in the children writing a book, which Mark showcased in the Chamber today.
Mark said ‘Plastic pollution in our oceans undoubtedly affects the sea and coastline around Cumbria which was evident through Driggsby washing ashore on a west Cumbrian beach and plastic being found inside the whale. In Britain, we are increasingly more aware of plastic pollution, however, plastic waste from other countries can undoubtedly find its way to our coastline.
I am very proud that local children in my constituency who attend Ashfield Infant and Nursery School, Holme St Cuthbert’s School and St Michaels Nursery and Infant School have written a book about Driggsby to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans. I am pleased that I was able to highlight their work in Westminster.
