Mark Jenkinson MP is calling for local nominations for the 2023 Parliamentary Taxi and Private Hire Awards.
The annual event offers an opportunity for taxi or private hire drivers based within his Workington Constituency to be welcomed to the Houses of Parliament for the ceremony.
It is also a chance for Parliamentarians to shine a light on the excellent things happening across the sector, including the many drivers who contribute to their local communities.
Nominations are open to all Workington constituency-based taxi or private hire vehicle drivers who have gone above and beyond to support their customers – whether on the school run, the daily commute, or helping people to make appointments on time.
Mark Jenkinson, MP for Workington, said: “Taxi and private hire drivers perform a really important role, particularly in a rural county like ours. They keep our communities connected; they provide a lifeline for those who don’t drive or have a car.
“Drivers allow people to make hospital appointments, to get their grocery shopping, or to catch up with friends, helping combat loneliness and social isolation.
“It is right that we celebrate and congratulate the men and women in the industry who have gone the extra mile to help people within my constituency.”
To nominate a taxi or private hire driver who you believe has gone over and above to help residents in your area, please send an email to [email protected], highlighting who your nomination is, the firm they work for and give reason to why you nominated them.
Judges are looking for a wide variety of nominations for those drivers who have gone ‘above and beyond’, for example though
• charitable work
• a local hero who helped someone in need
• supporting customers with disabilities
• championing sustainability / EV adoption
• speaking up for the taxi and minicab trade
Organisers are seeking nominations of female drivers, who remain a minority in the industry, in a bid to encourage more women to join the trade.
The awards reception is due to be held on Tuesday 6th June between 2 and 4pm at the Terrace Pavilion.
