At a time when council taxpayers are hard-pressed, I'm campaigning for our Borough, County and our larger Town and Parish councils to freeze their council tax.
Local government has been well supported throughout the pandemic, with some larger councils being able to bank some of the additional income.
This year's local government settlement from our Conservative government has been more generous than budgeted for and leaves room for a freeze without any impact on services.
Across Allerdale, an average Band D bill in the borough is currently £2,033.03 a year. £179.72 of that pays for services provided by Allerdale Borough Council, £1498.04 of that pays for services provided by Cumbria County Council and £272.16 of that pays for services provided by the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The rest of the bill goes towards services provided by local town and parish councils.
Compared to the year before, for a Band D property that represented a £5 increase for Allerdale Borough, a £6.57 increase for the PCC and a WHOPPING £57.48 increase for Cumbria County Council - half of which they didn't need and banked.
This year, Conservative-led Allerdale Borough Council consulted on a council tax rise of £5 for a Band D property and the Conservative PCC consulted on an increase of £10 for a Band D property, while Labour/Lib Dem-led Cumbria County Council consulted on a 1.99% increase, which equates to £29.81 for a Band D property. This is in top of an additional 2% (£29.96) for Adult Social Care. Another WHOPPING £59.77 increase.
Prior to this years agreement of council budgets by their respective full councils, I'm campaigning for a COUNCIL TAX FREEZE and I want to hear your thoughts...
