Mark Jenkinson MP has welcomed more than £3m of additional Government funding to fix potholes in Cumberland.
The Government is investing a further £200 million to fix four million potholes across the country, improving road standards for drivers.
Pothole funding for Cumbria is the highest level ever – and has increased x10 since the Conservative government introduced it in 2015.
However, despite this investment the former Cumbria County Council failed to properly maintain our roads – and potholes are among the most common complaints in my inbox.
What we need from the new council is a sustainable road maintenance strategy, and action where it was lacking previously. They can’t plead penury now – they have the investment. And they can’t complain that no one has told them, particularly since the launch of my dedicated pothole reporting tool.
Mark Jenkinson MP
This funding builds on the £2.7 billion of highways maintenance funding, already committed between tax years 2022 to 2025.
The move comes as it has been revealed Conservative-run councils repaired three times as many potholes on average as Labour councils did in the last year.
The £200 million funding is in addition to the £2.7 billion investment already committed to improve local roads for millions of drivers across the country.
