Following Michael Gove's letter to council leaders yesterday, urging them to support our pubs and clubs who want to show the World Cup Final on Sunday, Mark Jenkinson MP is calling on Cumberland Council to follow other councils in agreeing not to take enforcement action on pubs who open at 10am on Sunday where they would ordinarily be in breach of their licencing conditions.
Some councils across the UK have already agreed to this, with Cornwall Council allowing pubs and clubs to open early in support.
Mark Jenkinson said: "Seeing the Lionesses get to the World Cup Final is a momentous occasion. This is not only a huge accomplishment for the team, but for women's football across the UK."
"Since their success in the Euros last year, we have seen an extra 2.4 million more women and girls participate in football in 2022/2023, as well as a 10% increase in female registered teams and a 16% increase in female registered players. Interest in the women's sport has exploded, and this is something we should all celebrate as part of the World Cup Final on Sunday, and I urge Cumberland Council to facilitate this."
"I wish the Lionesses the best in their final. Bring it home!"
