MARK Jenkinson MP has welcomed the return of a popular community event at Harrington Marina following a successful campaign to save it.
Harrington Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday 26th August, replacing last year’s Harrington Marina Day which had been cancelled by Labour-led Workington Town Council
At the time, Mark launched a petition to put pressure on the town council to reverse its decision, but there was given enough notice to salvage the event.
Fortunately, new organisers Coastal Communities have launched a re-branded event complete with children’s entertainment, fairground rides, and inflatables.
The fun day will also boast a beer tent, a stage for performers, and a number of stalls selling food and drink.
Mark said: “This will be a great day for Harrington. I would like to thank members of Coastal Communities who have stepped into the breach to revive this popular family day for the community.
“I would also like to thank Conservative councillor Paul Larkin for his efforts. It was Paul who brought to my attention that Labour-led Workington town Council had been seeking to cancel the event in the first place.
“I am delighted that this popular family fun day will go ahead this year, following my campaign. It has a new name and has been organised by people genuinely care about their community. Please come and support the Harrington Family Fun Day.”
Funding for the event has been secured from the Police, Crime and Fire Commissioner, the Cumberland Building Society Community Fund, Workington’s Derwent Rotary Club, Dobies’ Charitable Trust, RAF General Engineering, and Workington Town Council.
Angela Larkin, of Coastal Communities, said: “We decided to get together and create a proper community group with the intention of putting on the fun day after the event last year was cancelled at the last minute. We saw the anger and frustration of the community on social media and through word of mouth.
“Harrington has had a fun day annually for decades, including Lions’ Day and Marina day, we didn’t think it was fair that the community should miss out. We are all doing this as a voluntary group. We don’t need any payment to have the day and helping people is payment enough for us.
